The Town History

The history of the town can be traced to the 16th century when a reference to the spring, named “The Stinker” for its characteristic sulfurous smell, appears.

The first spa building with five spa cabins and 22 rooms was built by the peasants of Nová Ves in 1803 where today’s Staré Lázně (The Old Spa) stands. Soon after putting the baths into operation, the peasants discovered that the profit gained from it did not correspond with their monetary ideas and soon they were unable to repay the debts incurred by building the health resort. In order to avoid confiscation of their own property, they offered the baths to Prince Karl Löwenstein, the then owner of the estate. Four other springs are already mentioned by this date.

In 1872, the Löwensteins sold the spa to a company from Pilsen whose director was JUDr. Pankraz. Three years later, in the middle of the newly established park, a new spa building – today’s Spa Hotel Prusík – was constructed 2 km from the original spa. On a small hill nearby, the Virgin Mary Chapel was built and a new town began to grow up around the spa park. The five healing springs (given names in 1874: Karlův, Žofiin, Františkův, Giselin and Skalní) have now been collected at today’s Prusík drinking pavilion. Their composition was similar to the present spring and at the time, epilepsy, rheumatism and cardio-vascular system diseases were cured here, using carbon dioxide baths together with drinking treatments.

Konstantinovy Lázně expanded considerably after it was connected to the railway network in 1901. New hotels were built and after World War I, as well as a swimming pool with a sand beach at Staré Lázně, a water conduit, electric line and cinema. During this period, the owners and renters of the spa often changed. Between the two World Wars, treatment concentrated on the diseases of the cardio-vascular system, the motor system and women’s illnesses.

After World War II, Konstantinovy Lázně became focused almost entirely on the cardio-vascular system. The main spa building as well as the spring were named after Dr. Bohumil Prusík, a well-known cardiologist and great lover of Konstantinovy Lázně. Since May 1992, the spa has belonged to the Léčebné lázně Konstantinovy Lázně, a.s. Company.
