The Spa’s History

The original spring (named “The Stinker” – for its characteristic sulphurous smell) was discovered in the swampy meadows near the village of Nová Ves located near Konstantinovy Lázně and by the end of the 18th century, Prince Konstantin Dominik Löwenstein – owner of the estate of Bezdružice – was searching for gold, silver or coal with the sulfurous spring. Experts summoned by the Prince confirmed the medical strength of “The Stinker,” whereupon the Prince immediately started negotiations with the peasants of Nová Ves which lead to the land’s purchase.

Subsequently, the peasants of Nová Ves had a new building constructed, which was later called Staré Lázně (The Old Spa). Soon after putting the baths into operation, the peasants discovered that the profit gained from it did not correspond with their monetary ideas and soon they were unable to repay the debts incurred by building the health resort. In order to avoid confiscation of their own property, they offered the baths to Prince Karl Löwenstein, the then owner of the estate. Four other springs are already mentioned by this date. Their water, for example Prusík’s Spring, is comparable with some wells of in Mariánské Lázně.

Mineral water is pumped from a depth of 40 m at the site of a spring which was accessed in the 1970’s seventies, Prusík’s Spring. This spring contains the water from the five original springs, however the most important source possesses the highest content of free carbon dioxide in the Czech Republic.

Today, the Konstantinovy Lázně health resort concentrates on rehabilitation of conditions after coronary thrombosis, the operation of the cardio-vascular system, as well as treatment and prevention of cardio-vascular diseases.
